Fuente de La Explanada

As a culmination of all the sculptural interventions that took place in the urban space of Puerto del Rosario, in a first stage from 1995, and from 2000 onwards with six editions of the International Sculpture Symposium, a monumental ensemble was planned, which was commissioned to two of the participating artists. One of the most central and visible spaces in the capital of Fuerteventura was designated for such commission, a roundabout located on the seafront promenade facing the commercial pier, Avenida Reyes de España, where the streets León y Castillo, Doctor Mena, García Hernández and Ruperto González Negrín converge, at the very entrance to the old quarter of the city. The artists who received the commission each possessed important experience in the field of sculpture, which guaranteed good results. Amancio González Andrés is a native of Villahibiera de Rueda, in León, where he was born in 1965. In León, in the Nuestra Señora neighborhood, Amancio has his workshop installed. He participated in the second and third edition of the International Sculpture Symposium of Puerto del Rosario, in 2003 and 2004. He has also participated in other symposiums and sculpture encounters in Barcelona, Valladolid and Denmark. He has created public works for multiple locations, such as Asturias, León, Barcelona, Valladolid and Denmark. His work can be contemplated in museums and collections in Asturias, Valladolid, León, Madrid, Cáceres, Ceuta, Murcia and the Masaveu Foundation. Two other works of his are also found in Puerto del Rosario: "Perenquén," in iroko wood and dated 2002, and a seated figure titled "Descanso," in granite, dated 2003. Nicolae Fleissig, the other sculptor protagonist of this section, was born in Tirgu-Mures, Romania, in 1948, although his workplace is located in France. He graduated from the 'Nicolae Grigorescu' Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest. And he is also the only artist who has participated in all editions of the Sculpture Symposium. Several of his works are exhibited in Fuerteventura. The Fuente de la Explanada, which was finally the monumental sculptural project that Amancio González and Nicolae Fleissig undertook, was created over two years, until its inauguration in the spring of 2004. For some years before, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura was already thinking about the possibility of installing a large fountain in the roundabout. With the project defined and commissioned, Amancio worked the figures in clay, in his León studio, so that they could later be cast in bronze at a foundry in Madrid, in addition to designing the concrete blocks. Nicolae Fleissig took charge of the crown, which surrounds the sculptures, in Betancuria granite. The sculptural ensemble consists of a pyramid of concrete blocks with four human figures, which rest or advance upon them, plus a fifth figure, which presides over the fountain, a woman with a child in her arms, which has the particularity of being the first female figure created by Amancio González. The characters have an approximate height of two meters, and the sculptural ensemble from street level to the highest point of the woman totals approximately five meters. The diameter of the "island of blocks," on which the sculptures are placed, is close to five meters. Water emerges from the concrete blocks and slides over the basalt stones, depositing around it to form a pond. The ensemble has special lighting, to allow its contemplation also at night. The description of the sculptural ensemble gives detailed account of each of the figures: 1. The figure of the "Man of the island with the sea" represents the struggle of the island man with the sea. It is a person related to the sea who, in a posture of strength, tries to grasp the rock, while with the other hand throws a fisherman's net. 2. The figure of the "Man with the earth" relates man to the earth. In this case, the character appears facing a situation, which reflects a superhuman effort, when trying to lift a cubic volume of enormous weight. It represents the desire to order, clean and make the earth fertile, without counting on the presence of water, although trusting in the miracle of rain. 3. The figure of "The world of commerce" represents adventure, risk, entrepreneurial spirit, the decision to achieve new goals. The character carries a trunk. It was the world of commerce that gave rise to, consolidated and facilitated the projection of the city, throughout the history of Puerto del Rosario. 4. The figure of "The mother woman and the working woman," dressed as a peasant, is represented carrying under her arm an element of great appreciation for the inhabitants of the island, a water pitcher, that is, life, while embodying quiet work and as a mother offering affection to her children. Curiously, and from her humility, she is the only figure that appears executing two actions. 5. The ensemble is completed by an animal skull, a goat, which represents death. The goat has been an indispensable component for the subsistence of the majorero, since in addition to withstanding the harsh conditions of the island, it served as food, for footwear and even for clothing. Its presence in the ensemble is symbolic, as it signifies life, an immediate solution, a "travel companion." The Fuente de la Explanada, in sum, has achieved special prominence, to the point of having become a new icon of Puerto del Rosario, and in any case a very distinguished reference element, for residents and visitors.
