Cactus

The Sculpture Symposiums of Puerto del Rosario are characterized, among other things, by their internationality. Artists come from all corners of our country, foreigners of diverse origins, foreigners residing in Spain... And, as in this case, Spaniards living in other places. The Catalan Xavier González has resided in France for years, and came to Fuerteventura for the IX Symposium of the capital, held in 2015. That year the artists wrestled with Corten and stainless steels to erect their works, but Xavier used only the latter to carry out his. Through geometrically cut forms assembled together, the artist created a sort of cactus that rises several meters in height. It almost seems that the semicircles themselves recreate, in conjunction with the roughness that sanding produces in the steel, the spines that characterize this type of plant. The work as a whole appears thorny and sharp, one could even say aggressive, in the most attractive sense of the word. Not in vain, cacti owe much of their charm to the hardness conferred by the spines that conceal their nakedness. Located on Avenida Marítima, the base barely lifts the sculpture a few centimeters from the ground, so that the roots, spreading wide, can take hold and cling to the earth while the stem shoots up toward the sky, trying to touch the sun.
