The capital of Fuerteventura does not have ancient walls or arcades that majestically welcome visitors to the city, but with this work by José Villa Soberón, the town has acquired its own distinctive entrance arch. It was in 2015 when the Cuban artist left this slender and brilliant stainless steel sculpture in Puerto del Rosario, erected within the framework of the IX Symposium. This was not, however, his first creative spiral, this being a recurring element throughout his career. Few figures carry the symbolic weight that we humans have given to spirals, allegorical of life, evolution and persistence. Although Soberón's is unusual given its geometric and angular cut; instead of a delicate curved line that expands or contracts, the author employs triangular forms to create an angular spiral that describes a continuous trajectory, yes, but unpredictable and sudden like life itself. A steel metaphor for self-development, with oneself. You can see a spiral that wraps around itself and returns to the point from which it departed in a journey of introspection and search for the most hidden truths, often thorny, of one's own being; or a spiral that expands liberating and explosive outward, eager for everything that is yet to come, brave, hungry and unstoppable.
