Pelea de Gallos
Official title: Fragmento de Poder
Artist
A cockfight was Juan Miguel Cubas' wager for the Sculpture Symposium held in Puerto del Rosario in 2018, the tenth edition of the competition. But Cubas' roosters do not fight in a cockpit, but in full view of all the passersby who stroll along the Avenida Marítima of the capital. There, with no obstacle other than the clouds that may pass by, the magnificent animals stand out against the sky while they engage in a fight that will never end. Each feather, beak and spur show a level of detail that leaves the spectator breathless, who remains spellbound by that moment when the specimen of gleaming stainless steel seizes control of the situation and spreads its wings to pounce on its rival, crafted in corten steel worked with a product that gives it a rusty appearance; as if through the materials the sculptor had tried to reinforce that sensation of victory and defeat. However, rather than representing solely a tradition that in certain places of the world dates back thousands of years, the sculptor sought to materialize that moment of control and dominance, that "fragmento de poder", as he himself christens his sculpture, that occurs in any conflict; that instant that, when the outcome approaches, becomes eternal while one already knows himself the victor... and the other gives himself up for defeated.
