Piedad

Entirely made of Corten steel, this sculpture was created by Gemma Rosa Domínguez during the X Symposium held in the capital in 2018. The artist, a native of Gran Canaria, worked during the event to leave on the island her particular and geometric vision of the Pietà. The image of a Virgin Mary who, filled with pain and anguish, holds in her arms the lifeless body of her son Jesus Christ has inspired artists around the world for centuries. From pictorial to sculptural works, from the Vatican's Pietà by the great Michelangelo to the lesser-known Pietà by some anonymous artist, it is a scene that, due to its emotional charge, seduces the artist and captivates the viewer in a timeless manner. However, if something usually characterizes works of this theme, it is that most are figurative: they show a woman, a mother who weeps with a more or less blurred face over the son who was taken from her and lies on her lap with varying degrees of realism, depending on the author. These are works that usually show the scene, while Gemma invites us to imagine it through the purest geometric abstraction. Observe how the vertical piece curves as if bowing a face congested with tears while the horizontal piece assembles with the first as if it were cradling it. It is the Virgin's affliction and Christ's death without sculpting either the son or the mother, something that only art could achieve.
