The IX Sculpture Symposium, held in 2015, was dedicated to steel. Among the works that came to life that year is this enormous sculpture by Bettino Mauro, who came from Italy to participate in the competition. It is a gigantic stainless steel spiral that expands as it ascends until it is abruptly blocked by an enormous Corten steel nail that pierces and tears through it. It almost looks like a serpent rising from the ground and extending its tongue toward the sky. The sculpture, located in a roundabout in Risco Prieto, allows the vehicles that circle it to follow the sinuous line of the spiral and appreciate the luminous effects that the sun produces on the steel. It is a work charged with rhythm and movement, not only because of the form it describes, but because of the way the artist has worked the material. The surface, instead of being smooth and producing a mirror effect, is sanded, so that the steel traces a sort of circular drawings, as if the sculptor had been doodling on it. A technique that not only gives great texture to the work, but also creates great visual interplay when the sun hits it.
